About Shetland Folk Festival

A set of podcasts featuring highlights from the 2006 Shetland Folk Festival and preview podcasts featuring the visiting artists at the 2007 festival which will be taking place between Friday 4 May and Sunday 6 May. With thanks to the festival committee and artists for giving their help and permission.

Shetland Folk Festival 2008

Here is a little taster of Vidlin on Thursday night with Ryan Couper, Rory Ellis, Henrik Jansberg Band, Brother Mule and Le vent Du Nord. Your compere is Michael Coutts from the Festival committee.

There are tickets left for Clickimin on Saturday night where both Henrik Jansberg and Le Vent Du Nord are appearing along with The Chair, Hom Bru and Hanggai. After seeing both these bands last night I would reckon that the roof will be raised by the level of excitment that all these bands can create. Fully recommended.

More to come as the music is played.

Shetland Folk Festival Recordings Online

The Shetland Folk Festival can now be enjoyed all over the globe, all year round thanks to ZetCast.com and sffpodcast.blogspot.com. The online broadcasting networks are going to be publishing exclusive live recordings of the festival over the next few months as podcasts.

The first official Shetland Folk Festival show is now available on Zetcast.com and sffpodcat.blogspot.com. Jimmy Carlyle and Marvin Smith present the programme, which features top visiting artists Terrafolk and Crooked Still. The podcast features exclusive recordings from the Ollaberry Hall on the opening night of the festival. The series of shows will feature highlights from this year’s festival and will give listeners the chance to relive the sounds of the festival.

Podcasting is a new form of broadcasting on the internet. Podcasts are similar in style to radio shows but the advantage to the listener is that you can listen on demand. No more do you need to be a slave to a broadcasting schedule and never again will you miss your favourite programme – podcasts are available 24/7 and you have the choice of what shows you listen to.

To listen to the shows visit the websites – www.zetcast.com and www.sffpodcast.blogspot.com. You can either listen to the podcasts on the websites as you browse around the Internet or download the podcast file to your computer to listen to later on. If you download the podcast you can use any piece of software that can play mp3 files the most common players being Windows Media Player and Winamp. You can transfer the shows on to your mp3 player or burn then to a cdr and listen to them in the car on your way to work.

You can also look for the podcast in iTunes using the Podcast Directory and doing a search for Shetland. By using iTunes you can setup a subscription to the podcast, this means that whenever a new podcast is released you will get it delivered to you when you open up the podcast part of the iTunes.

The sffpodcast.blogspot.com website hosts preview podcasts for both the 2006 and 2007 festivals and some live recordings from 2006 from Tom Ball and Kenny Sultan and Elana James. These recordings are also available on zetcast.com which features various locally produced podcasts covering blues, dance and local music. Zetcast is open to anyone who wishes to create podcasts of any description, it doesn’t have to be about music.

Make the most of music talent

Originall posted by Hans J Marter on shetland-news.co.uk - 4 November, 2006

LONG TERM investment is needed to transform Shetland’s “world class” musical potential into a thriving global industry, according to a leading Scottish arts consultant.

Ronnie Gurr: Shetland's pool of musical talent is world class - Photo: Hans J MarterCentral belt-based Ronnie Gurr appealed to local politicians and investment agencies to regard the islands’ versatile music community as an industry in its own right.

Mr Gurr, who has managed bands such as Stereophonics and Culture Club, was speaking during the official launch ceremony of a revamped Shetland music website, on Thursday night.

He said that while www.shetland-music.com was a first step to showing the world what music from Shetland was about, a long term strategy was needed to turn that talent into a industry that could earn millions of pounds.
